Ethiopic syllable laa

A syllable, not a word with one fixed translation.

In Ethiopic writing, it combines consonant l with vowel a. The sound alone does not settle a word’s meaning; the language and surrounding syllables do. The script first served Ge’ez, the classical Ethiopic language. Its earliest clearly defined evidence appears in inscriptions from the second or third centuries CE. By the fourth century CE, vowel marks had reshaped its South Arabian-derived consonant alphabet into a syllabary: signs paired consonants with vowels. The script later adapted to Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
