What ሊ means
It represents li; words supply its meaning.
In Amharic, ሊ- before a short imperfective verb form (for unfinished actions) marks purpose: “in order to.”
How did this script develop?
The Ethiopic script evolved locally.
Northern Ethiopia used South Arabian consonant writing for inscriptions about rulers, deities, and titles during the first millennium BCE. The earliest Ge'ez-language inscriptions date to the second or third century CE.
By the fourth century CE, consonant signs changed form to show vowels, making an abugida. It carried Christian texts in Ge'ez, then adapted to Amharic, Tigrinya, and other languages. These dates describe the script, not ሊ.
