ethiopic syllable pharyngeal a

Ethiopic Syllable Pharyngeal A

192/358

ዐ is an Ethiopic syllabic character from a series once pronounced with a consonant deep in the throat. The sound depends on the language: Amharic keeps the old spelling although that consonant is no longer normally heard, while Tigrinya preserves the contrast. Alone, ዐ does not identify a word to translate.

What ዐ means

It marks a syllable; its sound depends on the language.

In Ethiopic writing, a fidel is a character that combines a consonant and its vowel. In Geʿez, the classical Ethiopian language, this series marks a voiced pharyngeal consonant, made deep in the throat. Modern Amharic keeps the spelling series, though that consonant is no longer normally heard; Tigrinya preserves the contrast.

Ethiopic writing combines consonant and vowel in one syllabic character. ዐ and ዓ belong to the same series but mark different vowel orders, so they are not interchangeable.

What does ዐ mean when someone sends it?

A lone ዐ cannot be translated without its word.

On its own, ዐ does not identify the language, word, or intended pronunciation. Ask for the surrounding text before reading it as Amharic, Tigrinya, Geʿez, or another language written in Ethiopic.

Do not silently swap it for አ: similar sounds in a language do not make the spellings interchangeable.

Where did the ዐ series come from?

It grew from an older consonant alphabet.

South Arabian writing—the script used in southern Arabia—reached Tigray in northern Ethiopia around the eighth century BCE with settlers and stonecutters. The earliest inscription described as an Ethiopian alphabet was found at a site called Dakhanamo. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions in the second/third centuries CE.

Early Ethiopic inscriptions include royal texts. By the fourth century CE, vowel notation had reshaped the older alphabet into a syllabary, where a character represents a syllable. The script continued in Geʿez manuscripts and remains in use for languages such as Amharic and Tigrinya. Ethiopic writing is historically connected to Ancient South Arabian writing, although scholars debate how direct the descent was.

It marks an Ethiopic spelling choice whose spoken value depends on the language.

Without the surrounding word, do not assign ዐ a translation.

1

Why does ዐ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
