Ethiopic syllable Wo

190/358

Choose wo in an Ethiopic keyboard or input method to type ዎ, the wo syllable in the fidel (Ethiopic syllabary). In Amharic and Geʽez text, it builds words; the surrounding word supplies its meaning.

What ዎ means

On a GFF mnemonic layout, enter w, then o.

The GFF-style Ethiopic keyboard uses standard QWERTY keys; the w row’s o entry produces ዎ. If it appears as a square or blank, the app’s font may lack Ethiopic coverage: input and display are separate problems.

What sound does ዎ make?

It is the “wo” member of the Ethiopic w-series.

In the Amharic chart, ዎ represents wo: Ethiopic writing changes the vowel by changing the form within a consonant family. Other Ethiopic languages can assign different readings to shared signs, so the surrounding word and language matter.

In Geʽez word-building, ዎ can serve as an affix, a word part attached to a verb stem. Its position inside the word matters.

What if someone sends ዎ alone?

Read it as a piece of writing, not a reaction.

Early writing in Ethiopia and Eritrea includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions—texts in an early consonant-only script—from the eighth and seventh centuries BCE. A recognizable Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second and third centuries CE; by the fourth century CE, vowel marks had turned its consonant base into an abugida, a system where consonant signs also mark vowels.

Aksum, an ancient kingdom in the region, used royal inscriptions to proclaim rulers’ deeds and faith; some were written in three languages for multilingual readers. Geʽez later became a liturgical language, and Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages adapted Ethiopic writing for living use.

Neutral orthography: it identifies an Ethiopic syllable, not a mood or reaction.

Alone, it may look like an unfinished word or a script sample.

Why does ዎ show as a box?

Usually, the font or app lacks Ethiopic coverage. As of 2026, display support still depends on the operating system and application; try an Ethiopic-capable font and check the app.

Does ዎ always sound like wo?

No. “Wo” is the Amharic chart reading; other Ethiopic languages can assign different readings to shared signs, so the word and language matter.
