Ethiopic syllable wee

Amharic writes it we; Tigrinya writes it wé. The Amharic sound is roughly w followed by the vowel in English “wet.” These are Latin-letter spellings of the Ethiopic syllable, not English word readings. ዌ is the fifth vowel form in the w-series; changing the vowel form changes the syllable. The English Unicode label “wee” does not set its pronunciation.

The earliest written evidence in Ethiopia and Eritrea is in Pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions, an early South Arabian-style script, from the 8th/7th centuries BCE. The first indigenous Ethiopic abjad—a consonant-based script that leaves vowels unwritten—appears in the 1st–3rd centuries CE. Adapted to write Ge'ez, an ancient language of the region, it began marking vowels around the 4th century CE and became a left-to-right syllabary. ዌ belongs to that vowel-marked system, later used for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and Oromo.

what does ዌ mean when someone sends it?

On its own, it gives a syllable, not a full message. ዌ may be part of a word rather than a complete word by itself. If someone sends it alone, ask which language or surrounding word it belongs to before reading a joke or tone into it.

Fonts can draw the same encoded syllable with different shapes. Without Ethiopic font support, a device or app may show a box, a fallback mark, or blank space; that display does not make it a different character.
