What ቈ means
It marks the qwa syllable in Ethiopic’s labialized q series.
Fidel names the Ethiopic syllabary; “labialized” means the q is formed with rounded lips.
Early consonant inscriptions in Ethiopia and Eritrea, related to ancient South Arabian writing, date to the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A distinct Ethiopian abjad—an alphabet that mainly records consonants—appears in the 1st–3rd centuries AD; vowels are added by the 4th century. The script first wrote Ge’ez, then adapted for Amharic, Tigre, and Tigrinya. These dates trace the script, not ቈ itself.
Why does ቈ vary by font?
The encoded syllable stays the same; fonts may draw it differently. A blank box means the font lacks Ethiopic support.

Questions people ask
1Why does ቈ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
