What ቇ means
Enter qoa on a compatible phonetic Ethiopic keyboard. Layouts vary: some accept a consonant-plus-vowel sequence that resolves to a syllable instead of using a dedicated key. A GFF layout chart for Dizi, Me’en, Mursi and Suri lists qoa for this character; here it is an input code, not a pronunciation guide.
What sound does ቇ represent?
It marks a q-series syllable with an open-o vowel. The Ethiopic q-series is a family of syllables built on a sharply released k-like consonant. In Dizi, Me’en, Mursi and Suri, this character pairs that consonant with an open o, roughly the vowel in English “thought” for many speakers. CLDR 28 maps it to the same consonant with a closer o in Amharic conversion, but marks it unused in Amharic.
The Ethiopic script grew from a consonant-only script connected to South Arabian writing, though the precise route is disputed. A South Arabian precursor reached the region by the 8th century BCE, and the earliest attestation of the Ethiopic alphabet is at Dakhanamo. The vowel-bearing syllable system developed in the 3rd–4th centuries CE for writing Ge’ez, an ancient language of the region, and later adapted to other languages. These milestones describe the script's development, not the first use of this particular qoa sign.
Why can ቇ look different in different fonts?
A font can change the outline without changing the encoded syllable. Ethiopic syllables may have variant glyph forms; Unicode encodes the syllable concept, not one mandatory drawing.

1Why does ቇ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
