ethiopic syllable ja

Ethiopic Syllable Ja

239/358

On the SIL Ethiopic 2.0 keyboard, press j, then v to enter ጀ. In Ethiopic writing, including Amharic, it represents a syllable; by itself it does not tell you a whole word's meaning. The script grew from an older South Arabian writing tradition.

What ጀ means

On SIL Ethiopic 2.0, press j, then v.

That shortcut belongs to this layout: its j row places ጀ in the first vowel column. Other Ethiopic keyboards may arrange the syllable keys differently.

What does ጀ mean inside a word?

It represents a consonant-and-vowel syllable, not a whole word.

In Amharic romanization, a way of writing Amharic with Latin letters, ጀ is jä. Its first sound is like the j in jam, followed by a short, unstressed vowel like the first sound in about. The surrounding letters and language supply the word's meaning.

How did the Ethiopic script develop?

It grew from South Arabian writing and later gained new syllables.

South Arabian writing was present in the region by the 8th/7th centuries BCE and is a documented ancestor of Ethiopic. The earliest clearly defined Ethiopic inscriptions date to the second/third centuries CE and wrote Ge'ez, an older language of the region. By the fourth century, the consonant script had become an abugida: each base sign combines a consonant with a vowel.

ጀ itself came much later: scribes of the Solomonic court developed it in the 14th–15th centuries for an Amharic sound. Amharic adopted the Ethiopic script from Ge'ez in the 13th or 14th century and became part of elementary instruction in the early 20th century. As Ethiopic writing moved from carved stone inscriptions to handwritten manuscripts, its letter shapes grew rounder. As of 2026, the script is used for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.

Neutral as a character; its sound and meaning come from the language and word around it.

A single ጀ gives a syllable, not a complete word; use its surrounding text to read it.
