What ጁ means
It writes the syllable “ju” in Ethiopic script.
In the Latin transliteration, this value is written ju, roughly pronounced like “joo”: the j in “jam” followed by the vowel in “moon.” In an Amharic or other Ethiopic-script word, the surrounding letters supply the meaning.
The earliest surviving writing found in Ethiopia and Eritrea, from the 8th–7th centuries BCE, uses an older South Arabian script known as pseudo-Sabaean. A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the 2nd–3rd centuries CE. By the 4th century CE, added vowel marking had turned the earlier consonant script into an abugida: a system where a base consonant letter changes to show its vowel.
Why do the j forms change shape?
Each shape pairs the j sound with a different vowel.
ጀ is the e-form, ጁ the u-form, and ጂ the i-form; each is a distinct spelling, not a style choice. Ethiopic writing first served Geʽez and was later adapted, with changes and additions, for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.

1Why does ጁ show as a box?
The active font may lack Ethiopic coverage, so a missing-glyph box can stand in for valid text. Use a font with Ethiopic support or an application with proper font fallback.
