ethiopic syllable cha

Ethiopic syllable cha

ጨ is a syllable in fidel, the Ethiopic script, used inside words in languages such as Amharic and Tigrinya. It represents an ejective ch sound: a ch-like consonant made with a brief catch in the throat and a sharp release. The writing system began as consonant writing and later gained vowel-marked syllable forms.

What ጨ means

It is one syllable used inside Ethiopic-script words. In fidel—the Ethiopic writing system—ጨ represents a ch-like consonant with an ejective release, made by briefly closing the throat and releasing the sound sharply. It carries the first vowel of its consonant series, so it is a complete syllable character. Its exact pronunciation varies by language; the spelling chʼ is a guide, not a universal spoken form. Amharic and Tigrinya use it.

The earliest regional record of Pseudo-Sabaean consonant writing dates to the 8th/7th centuries BC. Clear evidence of Ethiopian consonant writing appears in the 1st–3rd centuries AD; vowel marking developed by the 4th century. Ethiopic writing is linked to the Epigraphic South Arabian consonant script, though the exact route is debated. It was first used for Ge’ez and later adapted to other languages. In the 14th and 15th centuries CE, Amharic added ጨ among new base characters to represent additional sounds.

In the Ethiopian tradition, ጨ is described as derived from ጠ to mark palatalization: the tongue moves toward the roof of the mouth as the consonant is made.

How do I type ጨ?

Choose the whole syllable character in your keyboard layout. Each vowel order in the chʼ series has its own character; ጨ is not a consonant with a separate visible vowel mark added to it.

Unicode defines the characters, not a universal keystroke sequence. Some Ethiopic layouts combine consonant and vowel choices; phonetic layouts use their own key mappings.

Does a different font change ጨ?

The encoded character stays the same; its outline can change. The Unicode chart shows one representation, and fonts may draw different forms of the same ጨ. Identify it by the underlying character, not by the curve.

Neutral in Ethiopic-script writing; its pronunciation depends on the language using it.

Why does ጨ look different in another font?

It can: fonts may draw different outlines for the same encoded character. A changed outline by itself does not mean the character has changed.
