What ጦ means
It writes the o-vowel syllable in the ጠ series. The series keeps its consonant and changes the vowel; Latin guides spell this syllable either “tʼo” or “ṭo.” Those are two transliterations, not two meanings.
The Ethiopic script developed from South Arabian writing brought to the region around the 8th century BCE. As of 2026, the oldest known attestation of the Ethiopic alphabet is an inscription from Dakhanamo; its letter order differs from the South Arabian alphabet. Vowel-marked Ethiopic forms emerged in the third and fourth centuries CE, changing the system from one that mainly wrote consonants to one where each sign combines a consonant and a vowel. The exact stages are not fully known.
The script was adapted to write Ge’ez, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre and other languages. That is why ጦ contributes a syllable, while the complete word supplies the meaning.
How do I type ጦ?
Switch to an Ethiopic keyboard layout. Ethiopic has no universal key sequence; each layout maps consonant rows and vowel forms to syllables, and key positions can differ.
If ጦ appears as a square, the selected font or app may lack an Ethiopic glyph. Choose one with Ethiopic support.
In ordinary Ethiopic writing, ጦ sits inside words; alone, it reads as a fragment.
A lone ጦ is not enough to translate; ask for the surrounding word or language.

Font support. The selected font or app lacks an Ethiopic glyph; choose one with Ethiopic coverage.
Does ጦ mean spear?
No. The Amharic word ጦር can mean “spear,” “lance,” or “war”; ጦ is one syllable, not that whole word.
