What ጠ means

A fidel pairs a consonant with its vowel.

Here ä is the default vowel; the Unicode label “tha” is a name, not a pronunciation guide.

Pseudo-Sabaean, a South Arabian-derived script, appears in Ethiopia and Eritrea in the 8th/7th centuries BCE. A Ge'ez abjad (consonant-only writing) appears in the 1st–3rd centuries CE. In the 4th century, vowel marks made it an abugida, where signs encode consonant-vowel syllables.
