What ገ means
It writes a hard g, as in “go,” with the first vowel order. In the Ethiopic fidel, a writing system that marks consonant-vowel syllables, each consonant has ordered vowel forms. Transcriptions of ገ vary by language and convention, including gä and gə; those spellings refer to one sign.
Because ገ represents a syllable, it has no fixed idea on its own. Its reading depends on the word and language around it; by itself, it is a fragment of writing.
How did Ethiopic writing develop?
It grew within an older South Arabian writing tradition. The connection is historical, not just visual: South Arabian inscriptions found in Ethiopia document contact and local language use. Many accounts connect Ethiopic writing to South Arabian writing, while others leave open a shared Semitic ancestor.
A clearly defined Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second/third centuries CE; its shapes were already rounder than their South Arabian precursors.
By the fourth century, consonant signs had developed ordered vowel forms, turning them into syllabographs: signs that write a syllable. One explanation links this change partly to the need to write and transmit Ge'ez religious texts as Christianity spread.
Which languages use Ethiopic writing?
The script serves several languages, including Ge'ez and Amharic. As Ge'ez receded from everyday speech, it remained a literary, liturgical, and court language. Ethiopic writing was adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre; in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Amharic adaptation added syllabographs for palatal consonants, made with the tongue near the palate.
A lone ገ is a fragment of Ethiopic writing; its tone cannot be read without the language and surrounding word.

1Why is ገ showing as a box?
It can be a font-support issue. Keyman GFF Amharic 3.3 requires an Ethiopic-capable font for correct display; switching to a font with Ethiopic coverage may fix it.
