What ጊ means
Choose the i-vowel form in the ገ series on an Ethiopic keyboard layout. The Ethiopic script is also called fidel. Unicode does not set a universal keystroke, so the keys depend on the layout or input method.
What does ጊ mean?
It marks the i-vowel syllable in the ገ series. The series keeps its consonant pattern as the vowel form changes. The Latin label “gi” is conventional; the exact sound follows the language using the script.
Writing in the Horn is attested by the first millennium BCE. By the fourth century CE, added vowel notation had turned an older consonant script related to South Arabian writing into a syllabic system. After Christianity took hold in Aksum, an ancient kingdom in the Horn of Africa, the script carried scripture and liturgy in Ge’ez, a language used in Ethiopian Christian worship; it was adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre.
Why can ጊ look different across fonts?
One encoded syllable can have more than one drawn form. Unicode permits alternate glyph shapes for an Ethiopic syllable, so two fonts can draw the same character differently.
