What ጕ means
Use an Ethiopic keyboard or input method; its layout determines the keystrokes. Unicode 16.0.0 specifies no universal key chord for ጕ.
Ethiopic input often uses consonant-and-vowel coordinates in a syllable chart; the input method resolves them into ጕ before text is stored. Unicode encodes the syllable, not one required drawing, which is why ጕ can look different in different fonts.
What does ጕ mean in a word?
It marks one syllable inside a word written in Ethiopic script. Unicode’s Latin label is GWE; the language determines how the syllable is read.
The script developed for Ge'ez and is also used for languages including Amharic, Tigre, and Oromo. GWE is a naming label, not a pronunciation shared by all those languages.
How did the Ethiopic script develop?
It grew from South Arabian consonant writing into a syllable-based script. The earliest known writing attested in Ethiopia and Eritrea includes pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions, in a consonant-only South Arabian script, from the 8th/7th centuries BC. A Ge'ez consonant script appears in the 1st–3rd centuries AD.
In the 4th century, the script became an abugida: each basic sign represents a consonant with a vowel, while modified forms represent other vowels. That shift is why ጕ marks a syllable rather than a lone consonant.

1Why does ጕ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
