What ጒ means
On Keyman’s Modern Geʾez keyboard, type gui. The sequence produces one Ethiopic character; other layouts may use different keystrokes because Unicode does not specify keyboard triggers.
What sound does ጒ represent?
Its GWI value varies with the language. The label describes a labialized g syllable: pronounce g with rounded lips, then the i vowel; the exact spoken form depends on the language.
The Ethiopic script began with consonant signs without systematic vowel marking. Yeha and Matara inscriptions preserve early Geʽez writing; systematic vowel marking came as Geʽez literary and sacred texts expanded. Its historical connection to Ancient South Arabian writing is documented, though the route is debated.
The Ethiopic script has served Geʽez, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Oromo and other regional languages. A character’s spoken value depends on the language using it.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ጒ show as a box?
A missing-glyph box means your font or app cannot display Ethiopic text; it does not change the character. Use a font with Ethiopic coverage. Supported fonts can still draw the strokes differently.
