ethiopic syllable ggwi

Ethiopic Syllable Ggwi

21/79

ⶔ is the Ethiopic-script way to write one Blin syllable, not an emoji. Blin also has a Latin-based spelling, so this character belongs to one of the language's writing traditions rather than every version of its written form. Fonts can give it different outlines.

Text symbol

What ⶔ means

It writes one syllable within a Blin word. “Ggwi” labels its place in the Blin syllable series; the label is not a translation of a whole word.

The Ethiopic script descends from the older Ge'ez script, named for a classical language of the region, and was adapted to write other languages. A 2004 proposal describes added Ethiopic characters as needed for Blin and several other languages. The first published Blin text is recorded in 1882, and a Blin dictionary followed in 1887.

Missionaries developed a Ge'ez-script orthography for Blin in the late 19th century. The Eritrean People's Liberation Front selected Latin for Blin in 1985; an Eritrean government committee began standardizing that spelling in 1993. ⶔ belongs to the Ethiopic-script tradition, not every Blin text.

Why does ⶔ look different in fonts?

Font choices can change its outline without changing the character. Unicode's reference glyphs are not mandatory drawings, and Ethiopic letters can take different forms across fonts. If a font lacks the character, software may show a fallback glyph or a missing-glyph box.

How do I type ⶔ?

An Ethiopic layout with Blin coverage is best for regular writing. Ethiopic input methods can turn consonant-and-vowel keystrokes into one syllabic character, but layouts differ in which extended characters they include.

In an editor with Unicode hexadecimal input, enter 2D94 and trigger its conversion command; the shortcut varies by editor. U2D94 is the lookup value.

Language-specific and orthographic: it belongs to a Blin spelling system, not a general chat style.

A lone ⶔ cannot identify a whole word; ask for the surrounding Blin text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ⶔ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
