What ጃ means

Type j, then a in the GFF Amharic layout.

Keyman’s mnemonic QWERTY keyboard follows consonant-then-vowel input: j selects the consonant series and a its vowel form. Activate this Ethiopic input method first; other layouts may assign different keystrokes.

What sound does ጃ represent?

It is “jaa,” beginning with the j in English “jam.” In Amharic, ጃ is one spoken syllable; the same Ethiopic script is used for Tigrinya, Gurage, and other languages. The chart of syllable signs is called a fidel. The script was first used to write Geʽez, a classical Ethiopian language.

The earliest writing in Ethiopia and Eritrea is in pseudo-Sabaean inscriptions, written in a South Arabian script and dated to the 8th/7th centuries BCE. Ethiopic writing appears in Geʽez inscriptions dated 1st–3rd centuries CE. It began as an abjad (a consonant-only script), then became an abugida by the 4th century CE: signs combine consonants and vowels. Scholars link the change to Christian scripture translation. The script descends from South Arabian writing, though its exact route is debated. Amharic adopted it in the 13th or 14th century; the ጃ series was added in the 14th and 15th centuries for new consonants.

Fonts can give ጃ different outlines. If the Ethiopic font is missing, it may appear as a box; either display issue leaves the character and its reading unchanged.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ጃ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Ethiopic block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
