What ዑ means
It marks u in the ዐ series. Its Latin-letter form is ʻu.
Ethiopic grew from Old South Arabian script in the Horn of Africa near the end of the first millennium BCE; inscriptions date to the second or third centuries CE. By the fourth century, vowel forms existed for Ge’ez, a language mainly preserved in religious manuscripts. It spread to Tigre and Oromo.
In Ge’ez, ዐ is a pharyngeal consonant, made deep in the throat. As of 2026, Amharic can use this series as vowel carriers.
