What does ኮ do in a word?

It writes one ko syllable; the surrounding word gives it meaning.

The Ethiopic script is an abugida: each sign combines a consonant with a vowel. It is used for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, and other languages; Ge’ez writing remains tied to church and manuscript traditions. In Amharic and Ge’ez, ኮ starts ኮከብ, “star.”

How did ኮ's writing system develop?

It grew from older South Arabian writing and changed over centuries.

Around the eighth century BCE, settlers and stonemasons from South Arabia brought Sabaean writing into Tigray. An archaeological overview places the earliest known Ethiopic alphabet inscription at Dakhanamo; a distinct Ethiopic script appears in inscriptions from the second or third century CE. By the fourth century CE, vowel notation had reshaped older consonant-only forms into syllable signs.

The link to Ancient South Arabian writing is established, but the precise route remains debated: one scholarly reconstruction traces the Ethiopic branch through a cursive form rather than monumental lettering. South Arabian inscriptions served funerary, religious, and administrative purposes. At Aksum, an ancient kingdom in the Horn of Africa, monuments sometimes paired Ge’ez with Sabaean and Greek; later Ge’ez manuscripts centered religious writing.

A writing sign: ኮ carries a syllable, while the surrounding word supplies its meaning.

A lone ኮ gives you a syllable, not a complete word; read the surrounding letters.
