What ኌ means

Amharic writes it hwe; one Tigrinya romanization writes hwé.

Those are language-specific Latin spellings. They point to an h-like breath, a quick w glide and an e-like vowel; Xwee is the Unicode label, not a pronunciation guide that works for every language.

Where did ኌ come from?

The sign belongs to a syllable script evolved from older consonant writing.

Ge’ez, a Semitic language of the Horn of Africa, was the script’s earliest written language. Archaeological accounts place a South Arabian alphabet’s arrival in the Horn around the eighth century BCE and identify Dakhanamo as the earliest attestation of the Ethiopian alphabet. Large stone inscriptions in Proto-Ge’ez, an early form of the script, provide monumental evidence at Yeha and Matara placed around the fourth to fifth century BCE. The route and balance of outside and local influence remain debated.

Around the fourth century CE, vowel marks reshaped the older consonant script into a syllable-writing system. A common account links that change to Christian Scripture and growing Ge’ez literature. The script was later adapted for Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Oromo and other languages.

How do I type ኌ?

Use an Ethiopic keyboard or Unicode hex entry.

In Microsoft Office, type 128C and press AltX. In GTK/Linux, press CtrlShiftU, enter 128c, then press Enter.

Unicode 16.0 does not specify one universal Ethiopic key sequence; language keyboards use their own syllable-entry patterns.

Neutral written syllable in an Ethiopic-script language.

Treat hwe and hwé as language-specific spellings, not a universal pronunciation key.
