What ⷔ means
In legacy Gurage writing, ⷔ stands for one syllable.
Xyee in legacy Gurage orthography is transcribed xʸe. The consonant is a voiceless, x-like rasp made toward the back of the mouth with the tongue lifted toward the hard palate; that raised tongue position is what “palatalized” means, and e follows.
The Ethiopic script developed through early forms called Proto-Geʿez, Old Geʿez, and classical Geʿez; ⷔ is a later Gurage addition. Modern Gurage spelling uses HHYEE for the same sound. Formal Gurage standardization starts with ES-781 in 2002; Unicode encoded ⷔ in 2005, which is not its origin date.
