What ⷓ means
It is the “a” form of the older palatalized-h series.
“Palatalized” means the tongue rises toward the roof of the mouth, adding a slight y-like quality. Writer Sahle Selassie Berhane Mariam and linguist Wolf Leslau devised this Ethiopic extension in 1962 for Gurage sounds absent from the basic syllabary; the Chaha volume of Ethiopians Speak appeared in Ethiopic print in 1966.
Which character belongs in modern Gurage spelling?
Use the form that matches the text’s spelling system.
A modern Gurage proposal from 2021 assigns the matching “a” syllable a separate character, 𞟣, in its palatalized-x series. ⷓ belongs to the older system; follow the one used by the text.
Technical: older Gurage spelling.
Do not mix the old and modern spelling systems.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⷓ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
