latin subscript small letter u

Subscript small u

101/128

ᵤ is a subscript u used in the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA) to mark a u-like component shaped by a neighboring sound, or an intermediate sound. Eemil Nestor Setälä published UPA in 1901. ᵤ is a distinct text character, not just a smaller-looking u.

Text symbol

What ᵤ means

It marks a u-like side component shaped by nearby sounds. In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), a lowered letter records co-articulation: a sound shaped by a preceding or following sound, or an intermediate sound. The exact reading depends on the transcription convention; ᵤ alone does not mean a plain u vowel.

UPA pairs ᵤ with lowered letters such as ᵢ, ᵣ, and ᵥ: their position signals a side sound, while the base letter identifies its component. Raised ᵘ has a different role, marking a very short sound; small-capital ᴜ marks a voicing distinction.

Eemil Nestor Setälä published UPA in 1901 for phonetic, phonological (sound-pattern), and word-history descriptions of Uralic languages, a family that includes Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian. Later reference works kept and adjusted it, and it was also used for Turkic and Mongolic material. A 2022 Oxford guide uses the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a system for writing speech sounds, for many Uralic languages written in Cyrillic or without a standard Latin spelling. It keeps traditional Finno-Ugric transcription, an older related notation, for reconstructed forms—word shapes linguists infer for earlier languages from their relatives.

How do I type ᵤ as text?

Use the character itself, not text formatting. Subscript styling applied to an ordinary u is only visual; it can flatten to a plain u when text is converted to plain text, so the distinction may not survive searching or sorting.

Specialist notation: ᵤ belongs where a transcription system assigns it a phonetic role.

Do not replace it with a visually formatted u when the transcription must remain searchable.
