What 𛱑 means
It began as French shorthand, then became a writing system.
Émile Duployé published his French shorthand in 1860 for quick note-taking. In 1890–91, missionary Jean-Marie Le Jeune adapted it for Chinook Jargon and Indigenous languages of interior British Columbia. Chinuk pipa was used for full texts as well as notes.
Why does 𛱑 turn when joined?
The vowel turns to follow the stroke before it.
In Duployan, this vowel rotates to align with the preceding consonant, so a joined form can face differently from the isolated glyph.
