What 𛱏 means
It marks /aɪ/, as in English “time.”
Duployé published his French shorthand in 1860 for fast note-taking. Pernin’s English manual, Universal Phonography, which uses this sign, was in print by 1882.
In Pernin handwriting, the stroke reverses next to K or G to avoid awkward angles; the vowel’s sound stays the same.
Is Chinuk pipa the same system as Pernin shorthand?
No; it is a separate Duployan adaptation.
Missionary Jean-Marie Le Jeune adapted Duployan in 1890 for literacy in Chinook Jargon and languages of interior British Columbia. Learners practiced Chinuk pipa in lessons and the Kamloops Wawa (1891–1923).

Questions people ask
1Why does 𛱏 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
