What 𛱎 means
It writes the long “ee” vowel, as in the English word “see.” Sloan-Duployan phonography is sound-based shorthand: it joins compact strokes into word outlines. “Sloan” identifies this as a vowel in the English adaptation.
Sloan’s English adaptation appeared in 1883
Émile Duployé published the French parent shorthand in 1860 for rapid writing; it became one of France’s widely used shorthand systems, especially in the south. Sloan’s 1885 handbook promoted his version for schools and professional reporting. Other Duployan branches were adapted to German, Spanish, and Romanian; a separate expansion for Chinook writing was used for Chinook Jargon (a regional trade language) and other First Nations languages in interior British Columbia.
