What u means
It is lowercase u in a wider text form. The width changes spacing, not pronunciation. The form belongs to a family shaped by East Asian text encoding: JIS X 0201 carried narrow Latin, and in 1978 JIS X 0208 included Latin again in a wider Japanese character set. Fonts came to distinguish the forms as hankaku (halfwidth) and zenkaku (fullwidth), though the standards did not prescribe literal character widths. Japanese word-processor prototypes appear in 1977, part of the setting in which mixed-width text mattered. u is a compatibility form of ordinary u, preserved for exchanging text across systems.
Why does u turn into u?
Compatibility normalization can remove its width distinction. Unicode maps u to ordinary u as its wide compatibility form. NFKC and NFKD apply that mapping, so the normalized text no longer contains the original fullwidth character. NFC keeps the distinction. Display width is separate: the font and layout affect how wide the glyph looks.
What does u signal online?
A run of fullwidth text can signal vaporwave-style presentation. As of 2026, text generators offer fullwidth strings as an aesthetic for social posts and bios. A lone u inside otherwise ordinary Latin text is more likely to be an input-mode mismatch than a special reading.
A fullwidth run can look deliberate; a lone u among narrow letters can look like a width mistake.
Use u in a code or name only when the field expects fullwidth text.
