Fullwidth Latin Small Letter S

s is the fullwidth s: the same lowercase letter in a wider cell, with no extra meaning. Japanese input and CJK typography use the form for layout; fullwidth words also give online text a retro-digital style. NFKC normalization can turn it into ordinary s.

What s means

It reads as the letter s, in a wider form. s is the fullwidth counterpart of ASCII s, not a different sound or symbol.

Fullwidth Latin forms grew from East Asian computer character sets designed to fit Latin letters into the square cells used for CJK text. Japan’s JIS C 6226-1978 was an early computer-character-set milestone in that lineage. In mixed-width systems, Latin letters could take one cell while CJK characters took two; the wide forms helped keep text aligned.

Why does s look wide?

Its encoded width is fullwidth, but its drawn shape depends on the font. The term describes a width relationship used in East Asian text handling; it does not guarantee that every font displays s at exactly the same size.

Raw text distinguishes s from s. NFKC compatibility normalization changes s to ordinary s, so a search or validator using that normalization may treat them alike. Keep the distinction when the fullwidth appearance matters.

When is s deliberate?

A fullwidth word looks deliberate; one stray letter may be an input mismatch. A Japanese IME can enter Latin letters in fullwidth or halfwidth form. Japanese vertical composition can also set fullwidth Latin letters upright in square cells.

In the 2010s, vaporwave communities used fullwidth words for a retro-digital look in music and online posts. A whole word such as surf reads as styling; one s dropped into ordinary text is more likely a width mismatch.

A layout form in Japanese input and typography; a decorative choice when used across a word.

A fullwidth letter may fail in an identifier or form that expects ordinary ASCII.

Will NFKC preserve s?
