What t means
Use a Japanese IME's full-width alphanumeric mode, then type t.
Microsoft's IME converts selected text with F9 to full-width and F10 to half-width; on a Japanese hardware keyboard, Shift NonConvert toggles the modes. No English layout has a key for it — without a Japanese input method, your system's character viewer can insert it.
Why is t wider than t?
It was built so Latin letters could match East Asian character cells.
Japan's JIS C 6226-1978 standard placed Latin letters together with kana, symbols and kanji in a 9494 grid. On the fixed-width terminals of that era, characters such as kana and kanji typically took two display cells where an ASCII character took one, so a matching set of "fullwidth" Latin letters let mixed text align cleanly.
Unicode kept t so text can still convert to and from those older encodings: it is the same letter and sound as t, only the width differs. During the 2010s vaporwave art and memes revived strings of such letters — aesthetics — as a retro-digital look.
Will t work like a normal t?
It reads the same, but software can keep them apart.
Unicode labels t a compatibility variant of t: programs that apply compatibility normalization (NFKC or NFKD) fold it into ordinary t, while programs that compare the raw characters keep them apart. Whether a search box, spellchecker or validator treats them as equal depends on which it does.
Some Japanese web forms state which width — and sometimes which script — a field expects; fields elsewhere may simply expect plain ASCII. If a field rejects or mangles t, retype it as ordinary t or match the format it asks for.
The character is encoded as wide rather than padded with space, but the font and layout decide how wide it actually draws — in proportional type it needn't be exactly double a normal t.
Unremarkable inside Japanese text; in English-only text it suggests deliberate retro styling — or an input method left in full-width mode.
Forms, search and logins may treat t and t as different characters — a password set with t may not match t.

- The names 全角 (full width) and 半角 (half width) come from the square cell of traditional Japanese type: a fullwidth letter fills the whole square, a halfwidth one half of it.
Questions people ask
4Is t the same as t?
For reading, yes — same letter, same sound. Software can keep them apart: compatibility normalization (NFKC) folds t into t, but exact matching and many forms treat them as different.
Why did my text come out with wide letters like t?
A Japanese IME was in full-width alphanumeric mode — or the text was styled wide on purpose. Switch back to half-width or direct input and retype, or convert the wide letters to ASCII with your IME.
Can I use t in a username or password?
It may be rejected or stored literally — and t may then not match a plain t. Unless the site asks for fullwidth input, stick to ASCII.
Why does t look like it has extra space?
It isn't ordinary t with spacing added — the character is encoded wide to fill an East Asian character cell. But the font and layout decide its drawn width, so it needn't look exactly double.
