What 𝚔 means
In LaTeX math, write \mathtt{k} for typewriter style.
The command requests a mathematical typewriter form; it does not require the source itself to contain the literal character 𝚔.
What does 𝚔 mean?
It is a lowercase k in mathematical monospace style.
A 1999 Unicode proposal documents an existing typesetting practice: scientific publishers used letter styles to distinguish symbols in formulas and wanted those distinctions preserved in plain text. The mathematical alphabets entered Unicode in version 3.1 (2001). The character identifies a style, while the font supplies its exact shape.
A notation character, not a particular value of k; its style belongs to the mathematical alphabet.
For ordinary text styling, use font formatting; Unicode reserves these separate alphabets for mathematical notation.

1Why did 𝚔 turn into plain k?
NFKC can cause this: Unicode's compatibility-normalization form folds mathematical letter styles to basic Latin letters, so 𝚔 becomes k. Avoid that step where a formula depends on the style distinction.
