What 𝚙 means
It is the Latin lowercase p in a mathematical monospace style. Monospace means each character uses the same horizontal width, giving this typewriter p its fixed-width look.
Mathematical writers use extra alphabets—italic, bold, script, and monospace—to distinguish symbols when ordinary letters are not enough. The style can carry a mathematical distinction, but the surrounding notation tells you what this p represents.
Why does 𝚙 turn into plain p?
NFKC or NFKD can reduce it to ordinary p. Unicode gives mathematical alphanumeric characters compatibility mappings to plain Latin letters. Software that applies either form can change 𝚙 to p, removing the encoded style and any distinction a formula relies on.
The character records a mathematical style, while the font supplies its precise drawn shape. Different math fonts can make the same encoded letter look somewhat different.
Where did Latin p come from?
Its Latin ancestor passed through Etruscan from Greek pi. Greek pi adapted the earlier Phoenician letter pe; Etruscan writers in ancient Italy carried the Greek-derived form into Latin. 𝚙 keeps lowercase Latin p as its base and adds a mathematical monospace style.
The listed 2001 date records the digital encoding, not the origin of Latin p or of mathematical letter styles.
It fits mathematical or technical notation; elsewhere, it reads as deliberately fixed-width styling.
