What 𝚊 means
It is a lowercase monospace letter that can mark a distinct variable. A fixed-width a in a formula can distinguish it from plain a or from another styled variable; the formula tells you what it represents.
A 1998 Unicode proposal gathered mathematical alphabets so scientific and mathematical writing on the web could preserve these distinctions in plain text. It expanded an older, smaller set of mathematical letterlike symbols; the proposal chose separate letter characters over style tags.
Why does this monospace letter look different in different fonts?
Unicode fixes the mathematical style, not one exact drawing. Monospace points to equal-width lettering, but Unicode does not prescribe one exact shape for the letter. The font supplies the drawing, so the same character can look different across typefaces.

For ordinary prose, use regular letters with text formatting instead.

2Why does 𝚊 become plain a?
Compatibility normalization, such as NFKC or NFKD, folds this mathematical letter to plain `a`. Avoid those forms when a formula needs to preserve the distinction.
Why can't Unicode Hex Input enter 𝚊 on a Mac?
It cannot: macOS Unicode Hex Input accepts at most four hexadecimal digits, while this value has five. Character Viewer is an alternative way to select Unicode characters.
