眠

cjk unified ideograph-7720

CJK Unified Ideograph-7720

眠 is the written sleep character — sleeping, being sleepy, lying dormant. It almost always works inside a word rather than alone: 睡眠, 眠い, 수면. So the language around it tells you more than the glyph does. One thing worth knowing: in Japanese, 眠る is also a gentle way to say someone died.

What 眠 means

Sleep, sleepiness, or dormancy — closed eyes, in writing.

The earliest dictionary trail I found is the 玉篇 tradition, which records 眠 as equivalent to 瞑, while older classical quotations use 瞑 for sleeping. So this sleep kanji evolved out of an existing written form; nobody sat down and invented it.

The build is honest about its job: 目, the eye, carries the meaning, and 民 supplies the sound in the standard shape analysis.

Which reading fits the language?

The language around it decides the reading.

In Mandarin it is mián, living inside compounds like 睡眠 and 冬眠. Japanese takes ミン in compounds and ねむる or ねむい in native words — and 眠る stretches to dying euphemistically or to something sitting unused. Korean dictionaries keep it as the Hanja element 면 in words such as 수면.

Which means 眠 is a terrible way to guess someone's language. One glyph, three reading traditions, no tell.

Treat it as a character, not a reaction

It is typed text, not a pictorial emoji, so nothing here is drawn by a platform — the shape you see is whatever font is doing the work. A stroke that looks slightly off is typography, not a different word.

If it arrives in a message you can't fully read, find the surrounding language before you assign a tone. The same short Japanese phrase can be a yawn, a memorial, or a note about a machine nobody has switched on in years.

Neutral in Chinese compounds; in Japanese, 眠る can turn into a gentle euphemism for dying.

In Japanese memorial wording, 眠る may mean “die,” not “fall asleep.”

Questions people ask

2

Can 眠 mean death?

Yes. In Japanese, 眠る serves as a soft “to die,” especially in memorial and gravestone wording. The sentence around it decides which sense you are reading.

Is 眠 the same as 睡?

No. Both point at sleep, but 睡 leans on dozing off and 眠 on the sleeping state; standard Chinese pairs them as 睡眠.
