Person climbing

Climbing, indoors or out, and the people who do it. The emoji covers the whole sport: bouldering (short climbs without ropes, with crash mats below, in a gym or on real boulders), roped sport climbing on bolted routes, traditional climbing where you place your own protection, and mountaineering on steep rock. Indoor climbing gyms, with walls studded with brightly coloured plastic holds, are where many newcomers meet the sport, and the emoji follows that world: a new route to try, a finished one to brag about, a plan to go on Thursday.

Phone makers draw it differently: the setting varies, and the figure may face left or right or have a rope. Whatever your phone shows, the sender means the same thing. The emoji also comes in skin tones and in man and woman forms, offered as variants in the emoji keyboard.

What does it mean when someone sends 🧗?

They climbed, are about to, or want you to come. In a chat it is typically a plan ("🧗 at 7?"), a report ("finally got that route 🧗") or a sign-off on a photo from the wall or outdoor rock. In a profile or bio it says "climber" the way ⚽ says "football fan". Among climbers it carries a little pride, because finishing a route after many tries is a big part of the sport's appeal.

It has no established slang meaning. If someone sends it with words about work, recovery or a hard week, read it as a hopeful "climbing out" or "going up" image and nothing darker.
