Otter

A sea otter, floating on its back and holding its dinner. Otters are sleek, long-bodied mammals that live in and around water; there are about a dozen species on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Most are river otters, which hunt fish in streams and lakes and sleep on land. The sea otter of the North Pacific coast is the odd one out: it spends almost its whole life in the ocean, and it is the one most emoji drawings copy.

That explains the pose. A sea otter eats lying on its back, using its chest as a table. It dives for clams, sea urchins and crabs, then cracks the shells open by banging them against a stone balanced on its belly, which makes it one of the few mammals that uses tools. As of 2026 most platforms draw the otter with a shell or a stone in its paws for exactly this reason; the details differ from phone to phone, but it is the same emoji.

The sea otter has the densest fur of any animal, which keeps it warm instead of blubber, and that fur is also why it was hunted almost to extinction before protection in the twentieth century. It is a famous example of a keystone species: by eating sea urchins it keeps kelp forests alive. So 🦦 works for conservation posts and ocean content as well as for pure cuteness, and nobody will object if you use it for a river otter.

What does it mean when someone sends 🦦?

Usually "this is adorable"; sometimes a gentle, playful kind of affection. Next to a video or photo, it means the animal and the delight of seeing it. Otters are reliably among the internet's favourite cute animals, so 🦦 also stands in for anything small, cuddly and endearing: a sleepy pet, a lazy Sunday, a friend who naps a lot.

The affectionate reading comes from a real habit. Sea otters doze in groups on the water and hold each other's paws so they do not drift apart. People who know this send 🦦 to mean "let's stick together" or as a soft, cuddly hello, and two otters 🦦🦦 can picture a pair. It can be flirtatious, but only the words around it and your relationship tell you that; on its own the emoji is more warm than romantic, and reading a confession of love into one otter is a mistake worth avoiding.
