Mending Heart

Healing in progress: the hurt is real but being cared for. The bandage says the wound is closing, not gone. That puts it between 💔, the moment something breaks, and a whole, happy heart. It fits a breakup, surgery, illness or grief, anywhere someone is coming back from pain rather than still in the first shock of it.

Google designer Jennifer Daniel proposed it in 2019 to fill exactly that gap between heartbreak and feeling better, for empathy, condolences, support, or saying you're improving. The proposal called the bandaged-heart picture familiar from pop culture, tattoos and media; the emoji is a digital version of that image. In public posts from July 2021, people used it while missing a late father and in a mental-health check-in.

Is it okay to send someone the mending heart emoji?

Yes, but add words when the news is fresh. Because it points toward repair, a bare ❤️🩹 right after someone shares a death, diagnosis or breakup can sound like “heal up and move on.” Pair it with plain sympathy, such as “I'm so sorry, I'm here,” and it reads as care. Once they're talking about coping, it works on its own: I see you mending, no rush.
