What 🫂 means
A warm hug offering comfort or affection. 🫂 shows two simplified figures wrapped in an embrace — no faces, no gender, no skin tone. That blankness is deliberate: the emoji says “I'm holding you” without saying who is who.
It was built to fill a gap. Its proposer, Jennifer Daniel, argued that 🤗 looked too cheerful for difficult conversations, so a quieter embrace was needed.
Hugs in text are much older: typed hug signs were documented online by 1995, MSN Messenger turned left- and right-hug emoticons into little figures, and Gmail had an animated hug in 2008. 🫂 made the full embrace a standard emoji.
What does it mean when someone sends you 🫂?
They're offering warmth — the caption says what kind. After hard news, a loss, or a rough week, read it as “I'm here for you.” Unicode's proposal also listed hello, goodbye, and thank you among its keywords, so it works as a greeting or an affectionate thanks too.
Warm, personal and low-risk for comfort; the words around it make it consoling, affectionate, or light.
In condolences, 🤗 can land as upbeat jazz hands; 🫂 is the clearer choice.
Drift: 🫂 arrived in 2020, amid COVID-19 distancing, but its proposal was filed in 2019. The timing made the virtual hug feel apt; the pandemic didn't create it.

Questions people ask

Not by itself. It's a hug, not a romantic gesture; only the message around it or your relationship with the sender adds romance.
