What 🎗️ means
It means “I support this cause”, with the cause supplied by the message.
The picture is an awareness ribbon: a short length of ribbon folded into a loop with the two tails crossing, worn on a lapel. The real ones are colour-coded. The yellow ribbon, tied to trees and worn on coats, became famous as a sign of waiting for hostages and prisoners to come home; the red ribbon was created in 1991 for people living with HIV and AIDS; the pink ribbon became the symbol of breast cancer awareness in the early 1990s and now fills October. Dozens more colours followed, and many colours do double duty, so even a real pin often needs a caption.
Unicode has one generic ribbon character, with the artwork supplied by each platform, so it cannot carry that colour code. Many major platforms draw it yellow or gold as of 2026, but the colour is up to each one, and the receiver may see a different shade from the sender. Read the colour as paint, not as a cause. If a post says “pink ribbon” or “yellow ribbon”, the words decide; the emoji just adds the pin.
What does 🎗️ mean when someone sends it?
They are standing with someone, not decorating the message.
After hard news (a diagnosis, a loss, a missing person) it says “I’m with you” in a quiet, public way. Under a fundraiser or a charity run it is an endorsement. In a profile name or bio it marks a cause the person carries all year, sometimes as a survivor or a relative of one. The tone is sober: it rarely sits next to jokes, and sending it alone with no cause in sight leaves the reader guessing.
Sober and public, the tone of a pin on a jacket; it belongs beside a cause or a person, never as a flourish.
Do not read the colour of the artwork as the cause; a yellow-drawn 🎗️ is still used for pink-ribbon posts.

4Worth knowing
- The yellow ribbon’s modern fame owes much to the 1973 hit “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree”; in 1979 Americans tied real yellow ribbons for the hostages in Iran, and many countries have since adopted yellow ribbons for causes of their own.
Questions people ask
4Is 🎗️ the breast cancer ribbon?
Only when the message says so. It is the general awareness ribbon; breast cancer uses pink, and on many phones this emoji is drawn yellow. In October, adding “pink ribbon” or makes it clear.
Why is it officially called “reminder ribbon”?
It came into Unicode in 2014 from Webdings, a Microsoft symbol font, together with the medal , and the font’s list already called it “reminder ribbon”. No campaign chose the name.
What colour is the 🎗️ emoji?
It depends on the device. As of 2026 many draw it yellow or gold, and the colour does not change with the cause, so say the cause in words.
Can I send 🎗️ on its own?
Better not. Name the person, campaign or memory first and add the ribbon as the pin; alone it reads as support for something unspecified.
