What 🤱 means
A woman nursing a baby at the breast, sent about feeding and new-parent life. Most platforms draw much the same scene: a mother looking down at a baby cradled in one arm, often with a blanket or her top covering most of the detail. The only thing you can change is skin tone; there is no man, no gender-neutral form and no baby bottle in this emoji.
It is the shorthand of the months with a nursing baby. Parents use it for feed updates, cluster feeding (many feeds bunched close together), night feeds and milestones ("6 months 🤱 and counting"). Midwives, lactation consultants and breastfeeding groups often put it in names and posts. It turns up in World Breastfeeding Week each August and in Mother's Day messages. Posts about feeding in public, with or without a cover, use it too.
What does it mean when someone sends 🤱?
Usually: I'm feeding the baby right now, or feeding is my whole life. "🤱 can't type, back later" means one hand is busy. "3am 🤱" is a tired joke about night feeds. A proud "first latch 🤱" (the baby taking the breast properly) or "made it to a year 🤱" is a milestone, and congratulations fit. A relative asking "how's it going 🤱" is simply asking how feeding is going.
One caution. How a baby is fed is a sore subject for many parents: some could not breastfeed, some chose not to, and plenty felt judged either way. Between friends who are nursing, 🤱 is warm and ordinary. Sent to someone who has stopped, or as a nudge about what they ought to do, it can land as pressure.
Who got the breastfeeding emoji made, and why?
A nurse, Rachel W. Lee, proposed it in 2016 to stand beside the bottle. Her argument was simple: the only feeding emoji was , so breastfeeding had no picture of its own. Her proposal showed a cradle hold, which most platforms still follow, and the emoji arrived in 2017. In 2020 Unicode added the bottle-feeding people , so a dad or any parent could be shown feeding a baby, while 🤱 stayed the breastfeeding one.
Warm and matter-of-fact between parents. It shows an everyday act, and few people treat it as racy or rude.
Feeding is a sore subject for many parents; never send it as a hint about how someone should feed their baby.

5Worth knowing
- Nursing images are ancient: Egyptian figurines of the goddess Isis nursing her son Horus, made in the first millennium BCE, are often compared with later Christian pictures of Mary nursing Jesus, though how directly one led to the other is debated.
- The official Unicode name keeps a hyphen, breast-feeding, although everyday English usually writes breastfeeding as one word.
Questions people ask
3Is there a dad or gender-neutral breastfeeding emoji?
No. As of 2026, 🤱 exists only as a woman, in six skin tones. For a dad or any parent feeding a baby, use the bottle-feeding set .
Why does 🤱 show as a blank box on my phone?
Your device or app has no picture for it, usually because its system or fonts predate 2017. Updating the system or app usually fixes it.
Is there a breast pump or pumping emoji?
No. As of 2026 there is none; 🤱, or both can stand in for pumping.
