Two people, one heart: a relationship, stated plainly. No kiss, so it sits comfortably in a public post your aunt will see. Around 2019, major platforms redrew the default from a man-and-woman pair to figures of unspecified gender, so picking genders now says who the couple is. In 2020, Emoji 13.1 let each person take their own skin tone, after a campaign by the dating app Tinder for interracial-couple representation.

It started as a picture on Japanese mobile phones. A 2009 Unicode proposal mapped versions from three carriers, DoCoMo's “fluttering heart,” KDDI's “couple” and SoftBank's “date,” to one shared character, so a message from one network arrived as the same emoji on another, even though each phone draws it its own way.

Does 💑 mean we're official?

Not by itself; the caption decides. With a date, a location tag or an anniversary caption, it's a relationship reveal or soft launch. Sent privately early on, it signals romantic interest; whether they mean exclusive comes from their words, not the emoji.

Attached to food, a pet or a 6 a.m. gym routine, it's a joke: a mock relationship with a thing.
