A small frown: disappointed, not devastated. It sits below 😞 and well below 😢 — the sad face you send to register a miss without making it a thing. Picking it over 😭 keeps a complaint quiet and deniable.

The 2011 proposal that led to its encoding cited smileys already used on questionnaires and placed 🙁 at "below average" on a five-step scale: good, fair, neutral, below average, bad. It rates something; it doesn't measure heartbreak.

Behind every emoji face sits the typed emoticon: computer scientist Scott Fahlman proposed :-) for jokes and :-( for serious posts on a university message board in 1982 — sideways faces you read by tilting your head left.

What does it mean when someone sends you 🙁?

Usually mildly bummed, not mad at you. After you cancel or say no, it's a soft nudge, not a demand for an apology — unless the thread was already tense.

It isn't only for small stuff: a 2018 Dictionary.com roundup shows it in public condolences and in reactions to a hurricane. So read the words beside it. With sympathy attached it's sincere; sent alone under a loss, it can read flat or dismissive.
