Smiling Face with Tear

A smile that cries a little because the feeling is big. It began with a 2019 proposal by Google designer Jennifer Daniel, pitched as a face for thanks, relief, empathy, hope and happy tears — feelings a plain smile or a big laugh can't carry. Its model was the typed emoticon :,-), a smiley with a tear. The tear is real, and so is the smile: that's the bittersweet mix.

What does it mean when someone sends it to you?

Read it as touched, unless the context sours it. Attached to their own news — a job, an acceptance, an anniversary — it's them tearing up at something good. Dropped alone into a normal check-in, it's closer to a brave face: fine on top, wobbly underneath, smiling through something hard. A bare one can go either way — if the mood matters, ask.

It gets risky as a reply to someone else. Under a flex or good-news post, the same tight smile can flip from tender to snide, so weigh the relationship before sending it there.
