Biohazard

13/13

☣️ is the biohazard sign: a warning that something can spread infection, like contaminated needles, blood or lab samples. In chat it's mostly a joke tag for anything gross, toxic or contagious, from a fridge experiment to "I'm sick, stay away". It's a different sign from , which means radiation.

What ☣️ means

Biological dangers: germs, viruses, infectious material and biological toxins.

You'll see the real sign on hospital sharps bins, medical-waste bags, specimen containers and many laboratory doors, often black on yellow or orange (colour rules vary by country). It was created in 1966 by engineers at the US chemical company Dow Chemical, working under contract for the US National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, who wanted one distinctive mark that was easy to recognise at a glance. Today it is the international sign for biological hazard.

It is not a general poison or chemical warning, and it does not mean radiation. A skull and crossbones marks toxic chemicals; covers radioactivity.

What does it mean when someone sends ☣️?

Usually "gross", "toxic" or "contagious", said with a grin.

After a story about mouldy leftovers, a filthy bathroom or a cold going round the office, ☣️ is dark humour: don't touch it, don't come near me. People also use it for a messy situation or a person they call toxic. Next to real news about an outbreak, a lab or hospital waste, read it literally.

Ominous-looking but mostly playful in chat; serious on labels and in health news.

Aimed at a person, ☣️ can sound insulting rather than playful.

Worth knowing

  • Its designers aimed for "memorable but meaningless": a shape with no prior meaning, so people would learn it only as a warning, and symmetrical so it reads the same from any angle.

Questions people ask

2

Does ☣️ mean someone has HIV?

No. Some HIV-positive people have used the biohazard symbol in tattoos, but the emoji carries no such meaning by default. Never guess anyone's health status from a symbol.

Why does it show as a plain black symbol?

It can. ☣ is an older Unicode character; without an invisible marker that requests emoji-style display, some apps and fonts draw it flat instead of as a colour emoji.
