Hourglass Done

1/31

⌛ is the hourglass emoji with all the sand in the bottom: the time is up. People send it for a deadline that has passed, a wait that is over or a countdown hitting zero, and fashion posts borrow it for an “hourglass figure.” Its twin has sand still falling and means the wait is ongoing, so pick the one you mean.

What ⌛ means

A sand timer that has finished running: every grain has dropped into the lower bulb. An hourglass is two glass bulbs joined by a narrow neck, filled with enough fine sand to run through in a set time. Turn it over and it starts; when the top is empty, the interval is over. ⌛ freezes that last moment, which is why its official name is Hourglass Done.

That makes it the emoji of endings on a clock: a deadline that has passed, an offer that has closed, a timer that has gone off, the final second of a game. Teachers, organisers and anyone posting a schedule use it beside “closes tonight,” “last day” or “registration ended.” It also turns up where people talk about time slipping away in general, from birthdays to “where did this year go.”

What does ⌛ mean when someone sends it to you?

Usually “the time is up” — and, on its own, often “I’m tired of waiting.” After a question you left unanswered, a lone ⌛ is a nudge with an edge: your window to reply has closed, or is closing fast. Between friends it is teasing; from a colleague or a seller it is a polite-looking push.

Read it with the words around it. “Sale ends at midnight ⌛” is a plain reminder. “Still waiting on that file ⌛” is a hint. “⌛ 3 hours until the flight” is excitement. If you want to say “hang on, I’m getting to it,” that is , not ⌛: sending the finished glass can accidentally announce that time has run out when you meant the opposite.

A completely different reading lives in fashion, fitness and body-positive posts, where ⌛ stands for an “hourglass figure”: a shape with a narrow waist and wider bust and hips. A caption such as “gym progress ⌛” has nothing to do with deadlines.

Why does an hourglass mean time running out?

Because each turn measures one fixed, finite stretch, and then it simply stops. Sandglasses appear in European records in the 14th century; a fresco by the Italian painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Siena, dated 1338–1339, is often cited as the earliest known picture of one, though that detail was restored later. Sailors used them to time ships’ watches, and churches to limit sermons; despite the name, they were made for many intervals, from minutes to several hours.

A clock face goes round forever, but a sandglass visibly empties, so it became the standard picture of a life or a chance running out. Carved on old gravestones, sometimes with wings (“time flies”), and held by the figure of Father Time, it meant “remember you will die.” The emoji keeps a gentler version of that message: whatever was being timed is over.

Neutral in schedules and announcements; in a one-to-one chat it leans impatient, especially sent alone.

Sending ⌛ to mean “please wait” says the opposite; the waiting hourglass is .

Worth knowing

  • Older Windows PCs showed a little hourglass as the “busy, please wait” mouse pointer, up to Windows XP; later versions replaced it with a spinning ring.
  • Winged hourglasses on 17th- and 18th-century gravestones illustrate the Latin motto tempus fugit, “time flies,” reminding passers-by that their own sand was running too.

Questions people ask

4

Does ⌛ mean “please wait” or “loading”?

No. ⌛ is the finished hourglass, so it says the time is up. For “hang on,” “loading” or “still waiting,” use , whose sand is still falling.

What does the hourglass beside a friend’s name on Snapchat mean?

As of 2026, it warns that your Streak (the run of consecutive days you two have exchanged Snaps) is about to expire. Send a Snap soon and it disappears; it does not mean the Streak has already ended.

Does an hourglass always measure an hour?

No. Sandglasses were made for many intervals; ships used half-hour glasses to time watches, and small ones time board games and boiled eggs. “Hourglass” is just the name that stuck.

Is ⌛ rude to send?

It can be. Beside a deadline it is neutral, but sent alone after someone has not replied it reads as “I’m done waiting.” Add a word or two if you mean it kindly.
