right double angle bracket

Right Double Angle Bracket

11/61

》 is the closing Chinese book title mark: it ends a title opened with 《, as in 《title》. These marks, called 书名号 (shuminghao), wrap books, films, songs and other named works. Japanese typography uses the same double angle bracket too, but there its job depends on the publisher's style.

Text symbol

What 》 means

It ends the name of a work in Chinese text. In 《阿Q正传》 (The True Story of Ah Q, a novella by Lu Xun), the book title marks separate the title from the surrounding sentence. The double pair, 双书名号, covers songs, films, documents and artworks as well as books; 》 always needs its opening 《.

Marking titles came with modern punctuation reform. A book-title mark appeared in Chinese punctuation proposals by 1917, and the new scheme received government approval in 1920. The 1951 rules still marked titles with a wavy underline, so the function is older than the bracket shape now standard.

Under the Mainland standard GB/T 15834—2011, 《》 encloses the outer title and the single pair 〈〉 encloses a title nested inside it. Taiwan's 2008 guidance keeps both the wavy-line and bracket forms.

Is 》 the same as >> or »?

No — they are different characters that point the same way. Close a Chinese title with 》 after 《; two greater-than signs or a European guillemet leave the pair mismatched, even where a font makes them look alike.

In Japanese, 《》 (二重山括弧, nijū yamakakko) is a secondary bracket. Dialogue uses 「」 and book titles usually use 『』; some publishers reserve 《》 for emphasis or certain kinds of titles. Read a Japanese 《…》 by the document's own style, not as an automatic book title.

Formal title punctuation: in Chinese it wraps the name of a work and does not replace quotation marks.

A lone 》 looks like a cut-off title; check for its opening 《.

Don't confuse it with

>> Two ASCII greater-than signs used in code and plain text; they do not close a 《 title.

Questions people ask

2

Can 》 stand alone?

Not as a title mark. It is the closing half of a pair, so a lone 》 usually reads as a fragment or typo. If someone sent only this character, ask what it refers to.

Why does 》 move to the next line?

That is a layout problem. East Asian line-breaking rules keep closing punctuation with the text before it; check your editor's CJK line-breaking settings and any manual line breaks.
