What ˖ means
It marks an advanced, or fronted, articulation.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a system for writing speech sounds. The IPA's 1947 chart added ˖ and ̟ for tongue advancement. Its 1949 handbook, Principles of the International Phonetic Association, calls them an “advanced variety.”
After a sound symbol, ˖ modifies that sound. For ˖ vs ̟, ˖ is the spacing mark written after the sound symbol, while ̟ is the corresponding combining mark placed below it.
Technical phonetic notation: it signals an articulation detail, not everyday arithmetic.
For addition, use +; ˖ marks an advanced articulation.
