What — means
It marks a break in the flow of a sentence. One dash lets the sentence pivot; a pair fences off an aside: “The answer—unfortunately—was no.” At the end of unfinished speech, it cuts the speaker off: “But I thought—”
The em rule is not a stretched hyphen. Pick it when the interruption deserves attention; parentheses make an aside quieter, commas let it blend in. If every sentence needs a dramatic entrance, a few periods will calm the room.
Its printing history predates the keyboard
Long dash marks appear in early modern printed drama, where they helped show pauses, abrupt turns, and broken-off speech. That is evidence of earlier use, not an established first appearance. The name “em” comes from a typographic unit tied to type size, not a fixed physical length.
The mark's job also depends on publishing tradition. Some traditions put a long dash at the start of dialogue to introduce a speaker, which is a different job from interrupting a sentence midway. The separately encoded horizontal bar has a related quotation role; looking alike does not make the characters interchangeable.
Does an em dash mean AI?
No. An em dash is not an authorship test. Dash-heavy prose attracts AI-writing suspicion as of 2026, but writers used the mark centuries before chatbots. If you're editing dash-heavy copy, fix the repetitive rhythm—not every dash.
Emphatic punctuation: the aside gets a spotlight instead of parentheses.
Do not accuse someone of using AI because they used em dashes.

Follow your house style. Many English styles close it up—like this—while others use spaced dashes. Keep the convention consistent within your document.
