What ‒ means
Use it inside numbers when alignment matters.
It serves as a numeric separator in phone numbers, catalogue numbers, IDs, and tables with aligned columns. With monospaced digits—all digits set to equal widths—it takes a digit-sized slot; proportional figures may not line up.
A 2002 Unicode proposal describes the figure dash as already present for compatibility with existing standards.
Specialist number typesetting; its dash meaning can depend on context.
For an English range such as 12–18, use the en dash.

3Questions people ask
1Why does ‒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
