What ⑈ means
It marks the on-us account field in a check’s MICR line. MICR means magnetic-ink character recognition; E-13B is its character set. Transit (⑆), amount (⑇), and dash (⑉) have separate marks.
Bank of America asked SRI, a research institute, to study electronic check handling in 1950; General Electric delivered ERMA sorting systems in 1959. A 2011 Unicode proposal noted the label mismatch: ⑈ is on-us, ⑉ is dash.
Specialized MICR notation, not ordinary punctuation.
A plain hyphen cannot replace the MICR dash in a check field.
